JOB SCOPE
As a Marine Service Engineer, you will ensure smooth operation of marine electronics systems on ships. Your responsibilities will include installing, maintaining, and repairing various equipment such as AIS, GPS, Radar, Autopilot, Gyro Compass, VHF Radio, MF/HF Radio, and other electronic devices. You will work both onshore and onboard vessels, collaborating with ship crew and technical teams to provide solutions, both internally to colleagues, and externally to customers.
Responsibilities:
1) Technical Duties:
- Troubleshoot and diagnose technical problems with marine electronics.
- Promote remote technical advice as required from time to time.
- Replace faulty components or equipment as needed.
- Install new components or equipment as needed.
2) Onboard Support:
- Collaborate with ship crew members to understand their needs and address technical concerns.
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols and regulations while working onboard.
3) Knowledge and Training:
- Stay up to date with the latest advancements in marine electronics technology.
- Participate in training to better your understanding of marine electronics
- Ensure clear communication with all parties such as suppliers, customers, ships’ agents, and any other stakeholders.
- Details such as ETA, ETD, Delivery Locations and other important information must be clearly communicated.
4) Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of service activities, including installation details, repairs, and replacements.
- Complete the company’s service report in-line with company guidelines.
- File the service report in accordance with company policy.
5) In-Office Guidance:
- Provide technical knowledge to other departments such as sales and service coordinators to assist them with their decision-making and sales processes.
Qualifications:
1) Education and Certification
- Technical diploma or degree in electronics, electrical engineering, or a related field.
- Relevant certifications from classification societies, equipment manufacturers or other training centers are advantageous.
2) Experience:
- Prior experience as a service engineer or technician in the marine industry.
- Familiarity with marine communication systems, navigation equipment, and automation systems.
- Certifications and approvals from major IACS Classifications would be advantageous, but not required.
- Certifications and approvals from reputable manufacturers such as JRC, YDK (Yokogawa), Alphatron, Jotron, Skipper, Danelec, Furuno, etc.) would be advantageous, but not required.
3) Skills and Attributes:
- Adaptability to work in different environments (both onshore and onboard).
- Willingness to travel and work irregular hours when necessary.
Career Path:
As a Marine Service Engineer, you can progress to more senior roles, such as Senior Service Engineer, Assistant Technical Manager and eventually Technical Manager – based on your expertise and performance.
